This invention relates to a silver halide photographic material and more particularly to a photographic material having an improved capability of preventing fringing (edge damage) of a photographic image when a dry or wet process silver halide photographic material is processed.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Although silver halide photographic materials are manufactured in a high yield, if a photographic material does not have an excellent capability of preventing fringing (edge damage), a stripe-like image defect called fringing occurs at the edge (boundary) of the developed photographic material.
The origin of fringing is assumed as follows. Silver halide grains having a certain size having a certain aspect ratio are agglomerated to form silver halide clusters of a certain size. Since the size of a silver halide cluster thus formed is larger than the size of a light-sensitive emulsion layer in which a latent image of a silver halide image is formed, if the edge of the photographic material is contacted with a developing solution, the photographic material is damaged, which in turn causes the formation of fringing (edge damage).
In order to improve the quality of a developed photographic material, the occurrence of fringing is preferably prevented.
Various antifringe agents have been proposed. For example, known are antifringe agents of the classes of dyes, surfactants, hydrophilic polymers, etc.
In particular, hydrophilic polymers are often used as antifringe agents. For example, U.S. Pat.
